GASTRIC PLICATIONOne of the newest and most promising weight loss procedures is the Gastric Plication. It is similar in function to the Sleeve Gastrectomy in that it reduces the volume if the stomach, thus being a restrictive procedure without a malabsorption affect. It produces early satiety or the feeling of being full due to the reduced capacity and limited intake. It is less invasive than the sleeve gastrectomy in that the stomach is folded or plicated upon itself, producing a sleeve-like affect without resection of 70-80% of the stomach. The procedure is reversible and early studies have shown satisfactory weight loss, though long term studies are not yet available. There is no foreign body and risks of staple line leaks are minimized. The procedure is still considered investigational by the American Society of Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery.
