Ideal body weight is associated with the lowest death rate in insured populations and is taken from the 1983 Metropolitan Life Insurance Company tables. Please note that the BMI does not distinguish between excess fat and muscle. It is possible for heavily muscled individuals to have a BMI in excess of 25 without increased health risks. If your BMI is below 19, you may be below the safety minimum. Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple math calculation that determines your weight-to-height ratio. You can learn your own BMI by finding your associated height and weight in the tables below. Based on the information you provide, the calculator will then determine your BMI using the formula pounds * 704.5 / height in inches². It can also give you information about extent of the risk factors that may be associated with your calculated BMI. Although there are several criteria used to determine if you are a possible candidate for the procedure, a BMI of 40 or greater suggests that you may benefit. If you do not meet the BMI or weight criteria, you still may be considered for surgery if your BMI is over 35 and you are suffering from one or more health problems related to your weight such as type-2 diabetes, hypertension, or sleep apnea. However, we consider all patients individually, so contact us to discuss whether or not the LAP-BAND® or the Sleeve Gastrectomy is right for you. |
